Each of the ten weeks is one author: a set of poems, short stories, or essays to read before class, and then a real discussion of them in Spanish. You'll analyze the language, place the work in its history, and write your own response to it.
Julio Cortázar.
Read his stories closely, work out vocabulary from context, and write a creative text of your own in response.
Pablo Neruda.
Analyze tone and emotional movement in his poems, and write an ode using the same devices.
Gabriel García Márquez.
Take apart theme and character, place the stories in their historical moment, and defend a reading out loud.
José Martí.
Interpret human values in his poetry, unpack symbol and metaphor, and write a short narrative of your own.
Federico García Lorca.
Work through symbol and theme, recognize neopopularism and surrealism, and respond to La casa de Bernarda Alba.
Horacio Quiroga.
Situate the author, analyze his narrative devices, and write a short story in his style.
Augusto Monterroso.
Read his miniatures, argue about what they actually mean, and write one yourself.
Carlos Fuentes.
Identify the machinery of magical realism, read the symbols, and write a short fantastical story.
Rubén Darío.
Understand Modernismo, find its themes and symbols, and write a text of your own from the reading.
Julia de Burgos.
Analyze identity in her poetry, interpret the images, and close the course stating your own position on it.

How many students are in a class?
Group classes typically cap at 10 students, with up to 5 additional priority seats available for Roadmap students. Class length depends on enrollment: sessions are 2 hours with 4 or more students, 90 minutes with 2 to 3 students, and 60 minutes with 1 student.
Is Spanish Literature online or in person?
Online. This C1 course runs live over Zoom, so you can join from anywhere. Our A1 through B2 courses also run in person in Falls Church, Virginia.
What if I miss a class?
Missing a class doesn't mean falling behind. You'll have access to your course materials so you can stay on track, and you can book a private tutoring session if you'd like one-on-one help with anything you missed.
Do I need the Level Placement Test?
If you're unsure whether Spanish Literature is the right fit, take the Level Placement Test. If you haven't completed B2, one of our B2 courses may be a better place to start.
Do I have to take all four C1 courses?
No. You can take Spanish Literature on its own, in any order. The C1 Exit Exam opens once you have completed all four C1 courses, and the A2 Roadmap bundles them at a lower rate, but each course stands on its own.
What is your refund policy?
Withdraw at least 7 days before your course begins and you'll receive a full course credit, valid for 365 days. We don't offer cash refunds for withdrawals. If Work-Life Spanish cancels your course, you'll receive an alternative option or a full refund.
