Our story

How Work-Life Spanish began.

Spanish shaped Tara Pérez's life long before it became a business. At 13, on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic, she became her group's unofficial interpreter. She barely spoke the language yet, but she loved the feeling of connecting people who otherwise could not understand each other. She came home and threw herself into Spanish, tutoring classmates, spending a summer with a family in Mexico, and at 17 becoming her high school's first exchange student, sponsored by her local Rotary Club to spend her senior year in Dénia, Spain.

That year abroad changed how she saw the world, and she kept following language wherever it led: working as an au pair in France, studying International Affairs in Colorado, a few years as an imagery intelligence analyst in Washington, teaching English in Chile, and eventually earning a Master's in Spanish Language and Culture from the University of Salamanca. Her path was not a straight line, but one thread ran through all of it, a pull toward connection through language.

"Fluency should not be accidental. It should be intentional."

Work-Life Spanish began in 2014, almost by accident. After returning to Washington from Chile, Tara started teaching Spanish at a local school. One student became a few, a few became small groups, word spread, and in 2018 she officially registered Work-Life Spanish as a company. Like most founders, she learned to wear every hat, curriculum, marketing, hiring, bookkeeping, all while keeping the teaching at the heart of it.

The real turning point came later. With studios in Arlington and Old Town Alexandria, the school was growing, but running a language school in the D.C. area means rising and falling with the federal economy. Through COVID, which moved every class online in 2020, and the waves of workforce uncertainty that followed, the old semester-by-semester model created a cycle of starting and stopping. Students would pause when life got stressful, lose momentum, and never reach the fluency they were working toward. So Tara stopped reacting and started redesigning. The result was the Annual Roadmap, a structured, year-long plan that guarantees a student's course progression, includes monthly conversation club credits, and keeps them accountable and moving forward. Retention improved. Outcomes improved. And the school became something steadier than a place to study verbs. It became a community.

In-person classes returned in 2022, and in January 2025 Work-Life Spanish opened its first dedicated studio in Falls Church, where it now teaches students both online and in person.
